Discover beautiful luxury fragrances, hand creams, and bubble bath at Plenty Mercantile. Timeless, sustainable gifts for any occasion.

Someone you love just got the keys. The boxes are stacked, the tape gun is somewhere in the car, and the fridge has nothing in it yet. You want to bring something. Not flowers that will wilt by Wednesday. Not a candle from the checkout aisle. Something they will reach for on a Tuesday night three months from now and think, this was a good gift. The best sustainable housewarming gifts share a few things in common: they replace something disposable, they are made to last, and they are useful without requiring you to know someone’s exact taste in art or furniture. They are the kind of gifts that quietly become part of a daily routine, not the kind that get tucked into a closet and forgotten. Here is what to look for, and a few ideas worth wrapping up. What makes a housewarming gift worth giving A new home is full of blank space and fresh starts. The temptation is to fill it with something decorative, but the most appreciated housewarming gifts tend to be the ones that solve a small, immediate problem. The kitchen needs a dish soap. The bathroom needs a bar of something better than hotel soap. The first dinner party needs a board to put the cheese on. When those practical gifts also happen to be sustainable, something else shifts. Instead of handing someone a plastic bottle they will throw away in a month, you are giving them the beginning of a habit. A reusable food wrap instead of a box of plastic wrap. A solid dish soap instead of a liquid in a pump bottle. A set of wool dryer balls instead of a box of disposable dryer sheets. The goal is not perfection. It is intention. A gift that says, I thought about what your daily life actually looks like in this new place, and I chose something that will make it a little better. Sustainable housewarming gift ideas for every room For the kitchen The Zero Waste dish block bundle This is the gift that started this whole list. Take a No Tox Life Dish Washing Block, pair it with a bamboo dish brush, wrap the whole thing in a cloth dish towel, and you have a ready-made, zero-packaging housewarming gift for under $30. The Dish Block itself is a workhorse. Each 6 oz block replaces one or more bottles of liquid dish soap. It cuts through grease on pots and pans, takes stains out of laundry, removes labels from jars, and works as a spot cleaner for counters and carpet. It is vegan, fragrance-free, phosphate-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free, made without palm oil, and made in the USA. The dish towel becomes the wrapping, so there is zero waste before the gift is even opened. Bee’s Wrap reusable food wraps A kitchen that is just getting stocked is the perfect place to introduce Bee’s Wrap. These beeswax-coated cotton wraps replace plastic wrap for covering bowls, wrapping leftovers, and storing produce. The Honeycomb Print Assorted 3-Pack comes with three sizes and lasts up to a year with regular use. It is the kind of swap most people are curious about but never buy for themselves. Organic cotton dish cloths A 3-pack of Full Circle Home organic cotton dish cloths is one of those gifts that sounds simple until you realize how many paper towels it replaces. At $10.99, it is an easy add-on to round out a kitchen bundle. For the bathroom Dulce De Donke Donkey milk soap + bamboo soap dish Everyone needs soap in a new bathroom, but nobody goes out and buys the good stuff for themselves during a move. That is what makes Dulce De Donke such a strong housewarming gift. These small-batch bar soaps are handcrafted in Oklahoma using farm-fresh donkey milk, organic olive oil, and organic coconut oil. They come in scents like Lavender, Eucalyptus Mint Moringa, and Cinnamon Spice Coffee. Pair one with a PLENTY Bamboo Soap Dish ($4.99 to $6.99) and the whole gift comes in under $22. The bamboo dish extends the life of the bar by keeping it dry between uses, which means less waste over time. Bar soap in general is a quieter, more sustainable choice than liquid soap in a plastic pump, and this is bar soap worth being excited about. Kate McLeod Lotion Bar For a more indulgent bathroom gift, the Kate McLeod Body Stone Scent Discovery Set ($38.00) is a solid lotion bar trio with zero packaging waste. Solid lotion bars last longer than bottled lotion, travel without spilling, and skip the plastic container entirely. This is the splurge-tier option for someone who would never buy it for themselves. For the living room A candle with a second life A candle is a classic housewarming gift, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as it is a good one. Oliver Fragrance Co. ceramic candles ($36.99) are poured into handmade vessels that become planters, pencil cups, or small vases once the wax burns down. The gift outlasts the candle, which is the whole point. The Kobo Candles Votive Trio ($39.99) is another strong option for someone who has not settled on a signature scent yet. For the laundry room PLENTY Made dryer balls Felted wool dryer balls replace disposable dryer sheets for the life of the home. At $5.99 to $6.99 each, they are an affordable, useful, and surprisingly fun gift. They come in designs like smiley faces, earth globes, and rainbows. Toss two or three into a gift bag alongside a Green Llama Cleaner Refill Tablet ($3.50), and the laundry room is covered. For entertaining A bamboo cutting and serving board The first dinner party in a new home needs a surface to put the cheese and crackers on. Totally Bamboo makes a range of bamboo boards that double as serving pieces, including an Oklahoma-shaped board ($27.95) and a Destination Map board ($34.95) with an engraved map of the state. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial, renewable, and more durable than most softwood alternatives. For a universal option, the Acacia Skinny Board ($19.99) works in any kitchen. Bittermilk cocktail mixers The first gathering in a new home deserves better than ice and whatever was on sale. Bittermilk makes craft cocktail mixers that are easy to use and hard to forget. They are the kind of gift that turns an empty kitchen into a place where people want to sit down and stay for a while. A bottle paired with a cutting board makes a “first dinner party” bundle that covers two gifts in one. How to bundle a sustainable housewarming gift One of the best things about sustainable gifts is how naturally they bundle. A dish towel can be the wrapping. A bamboo soap dish can be the base. A reusable bag can hold everything together. Here are three bundles at different price points, all using products mentioned above: Under $25: Dish Block + bamboo dish brush + cloth dish towel (the towel is the wrapping) Under $40: Dulce De Donke soap + bamboo soap dish + Bee’s Wrap single + a card Under $60: Acacia serving board + Bittermilk cocktail mixer + PLENTY Made dryer balls + Green Llama cleaner tablet, all in a reusable tote For anyone who would rather hand off the curation entirely, Gift Assist can put together a custom housewarming gift using any of these products. Every box is packed with low-waste, American-made packaging, and the shredded magazine strips that cushion each item are repurposed from old catalogs. A gift that feels like the beginning of something The best housewarming gift is not the most expensive one. It is the one that helps someone feel settled. A kitchen that has a good dish soap. A bathroom that has a beautiful bar of something handmade. A living room that smells like someone thought about what it might feel like to sit there for the first time. Sustainable housewarming gifts do that, and then some. They set the tone for how a home runs from day one. They replace the disposable with the intentional. And they are the kind of thing someone reaches for months later and remembers exactly who gave it to them. Shop thoughtfully made home goods at plentymercantile.com
